Message from the Founder: The Putera Sampoerna Foundation Academies

Whilst it is morally right to address the education needs of the masses as a whole, we believe that this country, with its vast population and resources, needs to supplement these efforts with a parallel initiative to produce (based on merit) as many quality leaders as it can – and as quickly as it can – so as to close the gap and fast‐track it towards it reaching its full potential. Thus, to supplement government educational initiatives the foundation will focus its available resources to provide deserving teens from the lowest economic quintile access to a world class secondary and tertiary education with the goal of developing them into competent leaders of moral integrity and a strong commitment to Social Justice, leaders who are analytical, knowledgeable and socially responsible, leaders who are altruistic but yet pragmatic in their approach towards resolving issues in this era of globalization.

The three integral components to this quest are: the establishment of Academies (advanced placement senior high schools), the establishment of a World Class University in Indonesia, and the establishment of a self‐revolving fund to provide student loans to our university scholars.

A PSF Academy, as the first component in the “Pathway‐to‐Leadership”, is designed to be a special school which incorporates an international academic standard and yet upholds the country’s identity and basic values. As a boarding school, we can not only teach our students the academic and leadership skills, but more importantly, impart upon them character and a value system of morality, empathy, tolerance, and social consciousness.

The student body of approximately 500 for each academy will be comprised of selected teenagers from the top 5% of performing students enrolled in state schools. The selection process is targeted towards providing the deserving individuals from the rural poor access to a world class education, and is designed to be biased towards a candidate showing leadership potential in their disposition.

An Academy will be better equipped than most other high schools and will have a low teacher to student ratio. Its teachers are also better paid than their peers in the public school system. Furthermore, its curriculum will include proficiency in the English language and will be formulated to ensure that, upon graduation, our students would have the accreditation needed to enable them to qualify entry into any university in the English speaking world.

Mission:

  • To collaborate with Koperasi Mahasiswa in fund raising activities for the capex required for campuses and for the adoption of our academy students and teachers.
  • To apply the available resources to the expansion of our academy program across the Indonesian archipelago through the establishment of new academy campuses and the continued selection and placement of potential future leaders from the top tier of academic performing junior high school teenagers and who hail from the lowest economic quintile into our academies.
  • To provide our academy students the quality high school education which would, upon graduation, qualify them to enter any big named university in the English speaking world.
  • To ensure that the psychological needs of the teenagers in our charge are well catered to.
  • To be diligent in carrying out our responsibility of character development and to impart upon our students a value system of the highest degree which advocates: ethics, tolerance, togetherness, duty to achieve, duty to pay back, consensus building, social and community responsibilities, and patriotism.
  • To continue to develop and enrich the credo, code of conduct, and the rites and rituals of our ever evolving student sub‐culture with the goal of establishing an enviable esprit‐de‐corps and networking among our students.
