The Putera Sampoerna Foundation: Achievements, Milestones, and Awards

2001

  • Putera Sampoerna and shareholders of PT HM Sampoerna established the Sampoerna Foundation (SF)
  • The Foundation provided scholarships to high school and national graduate students

2002

  • Two more programs were added – national undergraduate and international MBA scholarships
  • More than 4,500 scholarships were awarded

2003

  • The Foundation provided scholarships to winners of the National Science Olympiad

2004

  • Recognizing the need for quality teachers, the Putera Sampoerna Foundation launched its Teacher Institute (SFTI). It was the first institute in Indonesia aimed at developing and enhancing the professionalism and skills of teachers.
  • The Alumni Association (SFAA) and an internship program were established
  • The cumulative number of scholarships awarded exceeded 12,000

2005

  • The Foundation was one of the first to arrive in tsunami-hit Aceh with disaster relief through an education recovery program that provided tents, supplies and equipment so that the schools could continue to operate.
  • 3 state high schools were adopted under the new United Schools Program (USP) for school-wide improvement

2006

  • Established an executive MBA program in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), offering MBA specializations in Telecommunications, Energy and Business Law
  • Launched the first Student Loan and Student Financing facility in Indonesia for non-collateralized loans with the assistance of Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a division of the World Bank.

2007

  • Established the first National Annual Teachers Congress with over 1,000 teachers and principals participating from across the archipelago.
  • Adopted the first of 5 Islamic schools (Madrasahs) for education and curriculum improvement through the Sampoerna Foundation Madarash Quality Improvement Program (MQIP).
  • Hosted Nobel Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus, founder of the micro-finance bank, Grameen Bank, and the author of numerous books on Philanthropy, Social Business and Corporate Social Responsibility.

2008

  • Became the first education NGO in Indonesia to be awarded the ISO9001;2000 certification for efficient management systems.
  • Invited by former USA President Bill Clinton to join the Clinton Global Initiatives as the representative for Indonesia.
  • Recognized and awarded with a degree-granting license for the Teacher Institute, (now PSF University’s School of Education), the first private institute to be given this privilege.
2009
  • Established PSF Academies in Malang and Palembang. These Academies provide deserving teens from the lowest economic quintile, a 3-year senior high school education with a Cambridge-equivalent accreditation in a boarding environment.
  • Launched the School of Education in Jakarta with its first intake of students.
  • Together with Bait Al-Kamil (House of Perfection), the Foundation was awarded with a religious-giving license from BAZNAS, the Islamic authority of Indonesia, to collect donations and tithing from the Muslim community. The first and only secular NGO to be officially permitted to do so.
